How I Moved from Struggling Agent to an Internet Pro & Trusted Advisor

I’ve been an insurance agent for over 9 years… and I struggled at first!

How I Became an Internet Marketer
Here are a few things you need to know about me:
- Licensed life/health agent since 2004 – doing business as Huntley Wealth Insurance
- Spent my first few years “grinding” out the sales – (networking groups, mailers, purchasing leads, bugging my friends/family, etc.)
- Started my first site, www.InsuranceBlogbyChris.com, in Dec. 2008
- Since then, I’ve built 3 additional sites, which produce a combined total of 700 to 900 leads per month.
My sites have taken me from a work-at-home “solo entrepreneur” to a legitimate agency owner with an office, agents, and assistants.
The Road Less Traveled
Here’s how it all began.
In 2008, I was in big trouble. I had been an agent for 5 years, full-time for 2, and had exhausted all my business opportunities with my friends and family, and as I said above, none of my other marketing strategies were working.
Enter Glenn Cooke: I had been following an insurance forum for agents that’s no longer around run by this guy Glenn, who spoke about things like blogging, and SEO, and capturing leads with a website quote form. For months, I would see him write about this golden opportunity, but simply didn’t know where to start.
So in December 2008 when I received a mass email from Glenn to his followers saying for $500, he would set up a blog on WordPress, add a compulife quote form, and add an eBook on how to blog and get traffic, I knew I had to take action.
The crazy thing is Glenn later told me he sent that email to hundreds of agents (keep in mind he had established himself as a lead generation pro), and yet only 10 signed up.
… then this is even crazier. Of those 10, I was the only one who followed through and did anything about it.
The Early Days

While some of the strategies listed there don’t necessarily work anymore in a “post-google panda/penguin/hummingbird update” world, they worked back then, and it got me the start I needed. Here’s the type of traffic generation and backlinking I’m doing now.
How Leads Turned Me into a Trusted Advisor
When I started selling insurance, I had what my buddy, Jeff Root, calls “commission breath”. It’s very hard to do what’s right for the client when you’re thinking of the commissions you’ll earn on a deal.
As I’ve gotten more and more sales under my belt, and finances haven’t been an issue, I’ve moved from a “needy” salesman to a trusted advisor. There’s nothing better than giving people advice you would give to your own family.
